The London to Sydney Overland Expedition On Sunday, 30th August 1998, the London to Sydney Overland Expedition will be setting off from Clapham Common in London for Folkestone and the Channel Tunnel. Comprising a team of eight, they will be using two Land Rovers and a Pegasus microlight aircraft to attempt the first ever crossing from London to Singapore without the use of ferries. They will then continue on to Sydney, arriving in early March 1999. They are also raising money for Trinity Hospice (Registered Charity 1013945) based in London. This is an idea which the expedition leader, Sam Rutherford, has had for over two years. Now, the concept is about to become a reality for Sam and the seven others, 3 women among them, who comprise the team. The Aims of the Expedition
Overlanding'Overlanding' to India and Nepal hit a peak during the 70's, as the hippie trail went through a boom period, but then slackened dramatically in the early 1980's and has now reduced to a mere trickle. More and more people looking for the overland adventure turned to Africa, and the routes to Kenya or South Africa. By travelling this route, and particularly by continuing to Singapore and Sydney, the team is treading where few have trod before, and will be passing through some of the world's most inaccessible and beautiful areas. From desert to jungle, rolling plains to the Himalayas, just about every climate imaginable will be encountered, and with temperature variation from -40°C to +40°C, both the team and equipment are to be tested to the absolute limit. |
