Noel Lock Finances
I am the 'grand old man' of the group, teetering on the brink of thirty. When I was thirteen my parents moved to Holland and the experience of living in a foreign country was a bit of an eye opener for all of us. I, meanwhile, went to Marlborough College where my chief (only) achievement was to set up a house bar for the sixth form. This was a great success, raising a £1,000 by selling our own brewed concoctions at 15p per half-pint. For this I was awarded my house colours to the general amusement of all involved.
I took a year out to retake one of my 'A' levels at MPW in Cambridge on the strength the boy/girl ratio was the opposite of that at school. I then worked to save money to travel, doing the standard barman, waiter, packager, steward, BT data processor route. Finally, I managed a month Inter-railing around Europe. I then headed to wild untamed North, St Andrews University having the highest ratio of girls to boys at the time. St Andrews University can accurately be described as the longest weekend of one's life. My only (no pretense this time) achievement was to be instrumental in the establishment of The Southern Cross Club, a poker club of enormous ill repute. I was the treasurer, a position of precarious authority. I finally escaped with a 2:2 in Management Science, and count myself bloody lucky! I procured a graduate trainee job with Smurfitts on the strength of my dissertation; "A Structural Analysis of the Corrugated Case Industry in the UK" - honestly. However, wearing a suit didn't suit if you see what I mean and when a friend returned from a year in New York, we agreed to go into business together. A pub seemed to the obvious thing, how hard could that be? Three months later I found myself on the other side of the bar, back in St Andrews. I joined the Round Table, rising to the exalted rank of treasurer. Four years later I found myself grinning like the proverbial Cheshire Cat at the profits made from the sale of the Victoria Café (exceeding even the halcyon days of the school bar!) and wondering idly how to amuse myself when I bumped into Richard who was thinking of driving to Sydney……. I met the rest of the initial team and was talked into becoming the treasurer, or as my business card somewhat pompously states, the 'Finance Director'. Richard decided to trade in his army wings for a job in the city but has generously agreed to be part of our home team. Only time will tell who will be laughing at who. I love sports; rugby, cricket, football, athletics, swimming, netball, croquet, indeed almost anything on the telly. Rugby has been very good for jock bashing, except 1990 of course. I am a particular fan of cricket and am lucky enough to be a member of the MCC. I have recently taken up Real Tennis. After eight years in St Andrews my golf is still appalling. |
