The Route
The route they are taking leads down through the post-communist countries of Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria to the Bosporus and Istanbul, meeting place of Europe and Asia. Heading ever eastwards, they will cross the border into Iran in the shadow of Mt. Ararat and continue to the Caspian sea, before turning south to Teheran. A south-eastern loop takes the expedition to the Pakistan border, just a few kilometres from war-torn Afghanistan from where the next major stop is Islamabad. From there, on over the Indian border to a well-earned rest in Delhi, where several members of the home team will be waiting, having taken 8 hours to cover what has taken the expedition two months.
After a short break, a northerly turn will take them up through Nepal, and over the Himalayas into China and Tibet. With the road at over 16,000ft, the microlight will now be flying in excess of 18,000ft, with wind-chill temperatures approaching -60°C. The pass crossed, there will be a brief stop in Lhasa, spiritual home of the Dalai Lama, before a loop of almost 4,000 miles takes them north, east and then south to Vietnam and Hanoi. The jungles of Laos brings the team to the Thai border, and on to Bangkok for a pause before continuing down through Malaysia to Singapore, completing the first stage of the Expedition.
After the requisite celebrations, it is then ever onwards with a ferry to Sumatra and then Jakarta, before cargo passage to Darwin, Australia. With the end in sight, all that remains is the long drive down to Sydney, which comprises a sixth of the entire journey! Sydney, on approximately the 1st March 1999 is journey's end, and brings about the first break-up of the group in over 6 months as some stay in Australia and others return to the UK. That this experience will change everyone's lives is indisputable, but it is hoped it might prove to be a catalyst to others who have given similar ideas some thought.
The route is to remain fairly flexible so that decisions can be made as situations change, and/or more information is collected. Although the route will be based around airfields to keep the Pegasus microlight and the Land Rovers together as much as possible. Please click the map for an elarged version.
