Toby Marden Second mechanic
Toby, aged 28, has recently left a perfectly good job as a Chartered Surveyor to join the Expedition. The youngest of 3 children, Toby was born and brought up in the South-East of England, and was educated at Wellington College, Berkshire.
Despite the distractions of sport, he did manage to get some A levels, and attended South Bank University in London, where he read Urban Estate Management. Following graduation, there was a move to Dorset and a brief career in Landscape Gardening. Toby then joined the Salisbury office of Savills, the Estate Agents and Chartered Surveyors. Moves within the Company took him to the Wimborne office in Dorset, and finally Banbury, Oxfordshire where he specialised in buying and selling farms and estates. A keen sportsman, Toby has been a regular member of rugby clubs in London, Somerset, Dorset, Oxfordshire and more exotically, Mashona Land Country Districts in Zimbabwe. He is also a keen cricketer and winter skier. Both he and Noel are looking forward to filling in time en route picking a cricket "World XI" to challenge the "Best of England" along the route. That should be entertaining for the rest of the team… The urge to see more of the world was instilled at a relatively early age when Toby's family moved abroad for the first time to a posting in Maputo, Mozambique. Subsequent postings in Malawi and South Africa meant that Toby was able to benefit from seeing and experiencing life in a world very different from the one he had been brought up in. However, such was the draw that he returned to Southern Africa when he left school, Overlanding from Kenya to Zimbabwe before settling into a teaching job east of Harare. This is Toby's first excursion back to Overlanding since then. His reason for joining the Expedition is simply that "I want to". This mirrors most of the team's lack of inhibition at setting themselves a challenge and going for it. Toby is the Expedition's second mechanic. This is not by training, but because he was the last to "enrol" and there were not many other jobs left! However, this role or any other role he may have assumed, will suit him fine. So long as he leaves his repertoire of school boy jokes behind, Mutley, Pinky and the rest of the Team should arrive in Sydney in tact. In addition, his great appreciation for food should single handedly ensure that no-one goes hungry en route. |
