Will Fanshawe Flying, navigating and maintenance of Pegasus microlight
I was born in Aldershot on 7th October 1971 but spent much of my childhood abroad, firstly in Hong Kong and then in Sudan, Africa. Educated at Radley in Oxford I left school in 1989 and spent two winter seasons working as a ski guide in Verbier Switzerland before returning to the UK in spring 1991 to join the Army.
I spent a year at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst and was commissioned into the Army Air Corps in April 1992. I initially served with a Challenger tank regiment in Germany returning in March 1993 to join the Army Pilots Course. Training started on the Chipmunk aeroplane, before getting to grips with the Gazelle helicopter. On completion of training, I was sent to convert onto the Lynx twin-engined helicopter. I spent two years in Suffolk on flying duties including an operational tour as a flight commander with the United Nations Rapid Reaction Force in Bosnia. In April 1996 I was posted to the Headquarters of Army Aviation as the recruiting and liaison officer. I resigned my regular commission in May 1997 and left the Army in April 1998. A keen sportsman, I represented the Army and British Combined Services at alpine skiing and in recent years have taken up telemarking. |
